British Sign Language Level 1

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Anyone wishing to develop basic signing skills for simple communication or as part of a programme of study, to progress to more advanced study and/or employment, to study for personal development or if you have Deaf parents, family, friends or colleagues.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

The course is designed to develop communication with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of simple, everyday topics. There are 3 units, which are assessed internally and externally.

BSL 101 Introduction to BSL

Introductory skills providing a limited range of simple words and sentences.

BSL 102 Conversational BSL

Skills for simple, predictable conversations or instructions in relation to activities at home, e.g., using numbers and describing interests and commenting on the weather.

BSL 103 BSL at School, College or Work

Skills for simple, predictable conversations or instructions in relation to activities e.g., describing the building, activities carried out, transport used, directions.

Progression from Level 1?

Progression onto BSL Level 2, BSL Level 3, BSL NVQ3 and BSL NVQ6 is possible, depending on the requirements of the student.
How long will it take

Delivery

Level 1 courses are usually delivered over 20 weeks, comprising of 3 hours tuition per week, although this will often depend on the centre providing the course and the requirement of the student.

British Sign Language Level 2

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Anyone wishing to develop signing skills at a level above Level 1, Deaf people who wish to gain qualification in their native language, anyone wanting to progress to more advanced study and/or employment, to study for personal development, or whose parents, family, friends or colleagues are Deaf.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

Level 2 focuses on linguistics and enhancing vocabulary from Level 1 by use of continual assessment and video work (conversation, presentation and receptive). There is classroom work to develop the structure of your language use and preparation for the 3 units that need to be passed to be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language.

BSL 201 Receptive BSL

Skills for understanding routine language in everyday situations, expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases in the form of a presentation.

BSL 202 Productive BSL

Skills for demonstrating the use of routine language in everyday situations, expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases in the form of a presentation.

BSL 203 Conversational Skills

Skills for demonstrating ability to hold a routine conversation by using and understanding language expressed through simple sentence structures and set phrases, expressing views and/or clarifying understanding.

Progression from Level 2?

Progression to BSL NVQ 3, BSL NVQ6 (replacing NVQ4) is possible depending upon the requirements of the student. How long will it take? Level 2 courses are usually delivered over 34 weeks, comprising of 3 hours tuition per week although this will often depend on the centre providing the course and the requirements of the student.

British Sign Language Level 3

WHO IS THIS FOR?

The Level 3 certificate in BSL caters for the learning needs of those who already have competence in BSL at Level 2. By the end of the programme, the learner will be able to understand and use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.

Successful completion of the qualification can be used as evidence of the language skills needed in order to operate independently and at an advanced level in BSL and will be useful for those who currently or wish to work regularly with Deaf people or those who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in BSL.

There will be a range of classroom teaching, tutorials, homework, observed practice and feedback sessions that will culminate in a series of assessments to cover the three units.

One to One Teaching

You may want some initial tuition prior to joining a particular course. This might be because of a confidence issue or just simply because you want to make a head start.
For any current learners, additional tuition is available by negotiation and will be often be included in the course programme at no extra cost, unless the requirement is due to the learner falling behind due to absence, in which case support can be arranged at a special rate.
